Perception and Attitude of Female High School Students Towards Marriage and Childbirth

Abstract
Objectives: This study was intended to estimate perception and attitude of female high school students towards marriage and having a child, and to provide basic information for the education about positive attitude toward birth.

Methods: A total of 1,682 subjects participated in this study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from March through September, 2005.

Results: The results of the study revealed that 63.0% of total subjects said they would get married. Of 1,060 students in favor of marriage, 78.1% answered ¡¯to be happy with a beloved spouse as the reason for marriage, the majority of subjects wanted to get married at age between 25 and 29. Among 1,060 students who wanted to get married, 97.9% of them wanted to have offspring, however, of 622 students who did not want to get married, 16.7% of them did not want to have offspring (p<0.0l). The majority of subjects were aware of low birth rate in Korea. According to logistic regression analysis, the subject who live in a large city and being college-bound students would get married (p<0.01). and the statistically significant factors for predicting the attitude of having offspring, of the subjects who said they would get marred, were residence area (large city vs. county) and religion.

Conclusions: The findings of this study signified the need for educating female high school students regarding the importance of marriage, so female high school students could have more sound perception and attitude towards healthy maternity and childbirth.
